When i'm drivin' in my car, And that man comes on the radio
He's tellin' me more and more, About some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination, I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what i say
~“Satisfaction” Rolling Stones
Last week I was watching one of my favorite shows, Iconoclasts on the Sundance Channel (I highly recommend setting your Tivo for this one - it's faaabulous).
It featured Jon Favreau , writer, actor, director, if you're not familiar... I've got two words for you: Swingers and IronMan (is that 2 words or 3?). Anyway, he's quite brilliant both professionally and personally.
Jon told the story of having more and more opportunities come his way, filming in Canada and spending the better part of 6 months away from his family. (He said it was extremely rough on his marriage) After experiencing a big taste of success, he decided he would only work on movies that allowed him to work close to home. He told his peeps, “don't even send me the script if I can't film it in LA”. In discussing the overall strategy for his career and life he said this:
“In Hollywood, you eat the food but you're never really full, you always want more. It's a matter of learning to be satisfied.”
Do you get that? I do! One of the biggest revelations of my life happened in October 2003, and ironically led directly to one of the biggest successes of my life. I was working with this sentence; “I am joyful, fulfilled, satisfied and inspired today.” I contemplated this sentence every day, it stood on my nightstand, and it was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes and the last thing I looked at before going to sleep. It took effort, I had lived most of life with a feeling of dissatisfaction, trying to get somewhere... “better”. A few months later I was inking a deal with an agent and negotiating the contract for my first book, Journalution.
Why You Shouldn't Listen to Tony Robbins
This weekend I also watched a video of Tony Robbins, Frank Kerns and John Reese. Let me start by saying that I acknowledge and value the life-changing programs Tony has brought to the world. And the video was interesting, but there was something about it that really bothered me. Tony was telling a story about the castle he lived in, I think it's called Delmar Castle, it's made from ancient castles that he brought to California and he was very proud of it.
Until one day, when his multi-billionaire neighbor invited him over. His neighbor's home was apparently much larger or more impressive or something.... he told of the tour of his neighbor's impressive collection of rare wines in his wine cellar and the magnificent grounds and he said when he got back to his beloved castle, “as far as I was concerned I was living in the Delmar tenement.”
I believe the point he was trying to make was that his perspective changed in an instant, and you should surround yourself with people that make you 'hungry' for more.
I'm sure I missed the deeper meaning Tony and friends were trying to make because I got a little bit disgusted. I thought about all of the amazing entrepreneurs I know who are launching businesses against great odds, ignoring the critics – both external and internal- taking steps every single day toward your dreams. You are doing the work, making progress and seeing results but because, your results fall short of what other master-marketers are touting as their super-impressive results- perhaps, you feel like a big fat failure.
I ask you, will you ever feel satisfaction when there will always be a bigger castle next door? Will you ever experience real joy, when there will always be someone prettier or richer or thinner than you out there? Will you never stop comparing yourself to what you believe is another person's grand accomplishments and begin to enjoy your journey? Are you ready to allow yourself to eat and enjoy the pleasure of feeling full?
Write this down: “I am joyful, fulfilled, satisfied and inspired right now.” Then ask yourself, “what will it take for me to feel joyful, fulfilled, satisfied and inspired and live it starting today?”
Don't Settle
I'm not asking you to settle for less than your biggest dreams, I'm asking you to consider the amount of joy, fulfillment and satisfaction that is available to you right now. You don't have to wait for the money or the man or the house to begin loving your life. You can experience real joy, real happiness today, right this minute.
Frankly, I'm a bit tired of wealth-addicted “experts” telling me that if I buy their latest product or program, I'll learn how to be an instant billionaire or that my happiness and fulfillment are contained in this or that magic program.
Folks, your happiness is not in a box or a book or at a seminar. Your happiness and joy and satisfaction are contained in your “Things I Love” list and figuring out how to be completely present the next time your child giggles or while sipping your steaming cup of cafe mocha or staring deeply into another person's eyes. Those are just a few of the places I get my satisfaction.
Where you gonna get yours?
